Engineer Profile Caitlin Katie Correll

Engineer Profile Caitlin Katie Correll Engineer Profile Caitlin Katie Correll Engineer Profile (Caitlin) Katie-CorrellKatie finishing a marionette design at the ONeill National Puppetry Conference.Katie Correll is an up-and-coming mechanical engineer with a passion for puppets and robotics. So when she learned from zu sich mentor that the ASME student section at her institution, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York, was engaging in a project for children that involved dancing fish and talking flowers, she couldnt be more excited to be involved.Supported by two ASME Diversity Action Grants (DAG), Cooper Union students designed and installed the Interactive Light Studio, an educational play space located at the American Sign Language and English Lower School (Public School 347) in Manhattan. The unique student population of the school is composed of deaf, hearing impaired, and children of deaf adults, as well as hearing students. The Studio involves many e lements crafted to encourage youngsters to discover science and engineering, as well as ways for both deaf and hearing kids to explore light and indirectly experience sound, describes Melody Baglione, Cooper Union professor of ME and ASMEs faculty advisor. The studio includes a digital projection ordnungsprinzip and giant interactive screen. Images are projected on the screen, such as fish, and flowers that are synchronized with music and other sounds. As the kids move in the studio, the visual and sound elements respond, serving as the basis for various learning exercises.Correll, who chaired ASMEs Cooper Union Student Section for two years, became involved in the project for her senior design class. I wanted to teach the children about music, because music helps kick-start an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), she recalls. The project had already been up and running for a year, but she immediately saw ways of improving it.In particular, she notice d that the majority of the time the kids were utilizing the space for free-time play. But realizing there was much more tauglichkeit to expand upon what her teammates had already produced, she got to work designing a curriculum that could easily be incorporated into the Studio, with an aim of engaging the children even more. We wanted structured learning, she notes. I saw this need and I wanted to help fill it.With a background in toy design, Correll and the ASME Student Section designed and implemented a STEM-based curriculum that expanded on the projects original theme of exploration of sound and light. The central feature pursued was how shadows are cast. The lesson allowed the kids to suggest an object, guess the shape and morphology of its shadow, and explore how the shadow would change as the object is reoriented or if the light source location was adjusted.Fellow classmates, at Cooper Union, Dale Short and David Tan, added ways for children to explore sound and music visually . One program they designed allows the kids to visualize sounds they create with their voices or musical instruments. Another program enables them to use movement to manipulate sound by triggering different portions of a song, such as vocals, percussion, or keyboards. The technical aspects were particularly fascinating, notes Correll. The project installation used an Xbox Kinect and microphone as sensors, and graphics were generated by OpenFrameworks, a C$-based toolkit that allows for rapid development of computer graphics. The Cooper Union students had not used these systems before so they especially appreciated the chance to enhance their programming skills and sensor array expertise. But they also gained crucial leadership and teambuilding expertise, as well as knowledge about how to design and implement a customized system for a client. The outcome of the project was extremely encouraging. The curriculum resonated with the kids who gained an appreciation for the connections betwe en math and engineering and sound and light. Elementary school is where kids make a choice about STEM, says Correll. Were giving them a chance to learn about it and get inspired and find it really fun. In recognition for her efforts to promote engineering fundamentals, she received the 2012 Gold Medal of the ASME Charles T. Main Award.Correll is now on to a new phase in her career. She recently graduated and is pursuing a Masters in entertainment technology at Carnegie Mellon while interning for The Jim Henson Company. But she clarifies that the ASME project solidified her passion for STEM. It reinforced in me that going into a career in engineering doesnt have to be a traditional engineering career with HVACS, she says. I can do something really creative and innovative like designing these systems. And she couldnt be happier that the ASME DAG program helped to support her teams vision and goals. If we hadnt been able to access the funds from DAG, we wouldnt have been able to create such a robust system thats going to help these kids for years and years to come, says Correll. Our program is going to touch lots and lots of students, and that means a lot to me.Diversity Action Grant Applications may be submitted from the Beginning of the Fall Semester until the Deadline of November 1st.

This morning routine will save you 20 hours per weekThis morning routine will save you 20 hours per weekThe traditional 95 workday is poorly structured for high productivity. Perhaps when most work was physical labor, but not in the knowledge working world we now live in.Although this may be obvious based on peoples mediocre performance, addiction to stimulants, lack of engagement, and the fact that most people hate their jobs now theres loads of scientific evidence you cant ignore. The Myth of the 8 HourWorkdayThe most productive countries in the world do not work 8 hours per day. Actually, the most productive countries have theshortestworkdays.People in countries like Luxembourg are working approximately 30 hours per week (approximately 6 hours per day, 5 days per week) and makingmore moneyon average than people working longer workweeks.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThis is th eaverageperson in those countries. By consistently following through, youll create small wins. Small wins build self-respect and confidence, thus lowering your need for willpower. Small wins and confidence solidify the decisions youve made, giving you increased inner-knowing that you absolutely will achieve your goal.Another key reason that confidence lowers the need for willpower is that the more confident you get, the more you genuinely DESIRE better results. At the heart of willpower is not actually knowing what you want. Indeed, you may actuallytotenstill desireeating bad food, for example. Thus, youre at continually battling within yourself. This is a horrible yet common way to live. Most people do not know what they truly want. They dont know how to make decisions. They havent learned how to build genuine confidence. Most peoples lives are a constant back-and-forth of indecision and lack of clarity. Yet, decision and clarity go hand-in-hand are not actually hard to build. They are skills. You start with one simple one. And watch the ripples grow and success compound. As you become more confident and mature as a person, your desires fundamentally change. You stop wanting stuff you used to want. You start wanting to succeed. You start loving yourself enough to win at life. You start seeing a much bigger picture for yourself. Learn About the Council-Manager Form of Government

Learn About the Council-Manager Form of GovernmentLearn About the Council-Manager Form of GovernmentIn the council-manager fasson of city government, the city council makes laws and broad policy decisions for the city manager and staff to carry out.According to the International City/County Management Association, the council-manager form of government combines the strong political leadership of elected officials with the strong managerial experience of an appointed manager or administrator. All power and authority to set policy rest with an elected governing body, which includes a mayor or chairperson and members of the council, commission, or board. The governing body, in turn, hires a nonpartisan manager who has very broad authority to run the organization.? Use of the Council-Manager Form of Government The council-manager form of government was created to fight corruption and unethical behavior by fostering professionalism, transparency, responsiveness, and accountability. To the greatest extent possible, council-manager cities and counties separate the political nature of law and policy making with the apolitical nature of implementation. This form of government is used in cities and counties large and small. Most small cities use the council-manager form of government. Some large cities have retained a strong mayor form of government to effectively deal with immense political pressures that come with a large population. While this form of government was created in the US, its use has spread to other countries. Local governments in Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom have adopted the council-manager system. Manager Under the council-manager form of government the city manager functions as the chief executive of the government organization. Like a private sector, CEO does for a company, the city manager oversees the day-to-day operations of the city and serves as the chief advisor to the city council. In directing daily operations of the city, the manager is responsible for ensuring effective and efficient government service. Every city employee ultimately answers to the city manager, so the manager has the right to hire and fire staff as appropriate and allowable by law. As the councils chief policy advisor, the city manager recommends city policy for consideration by the council. The manager has a professional obligation to give complete and unbiased information to the council. The manager consults with department heads and the city attorney to ensure the advice he or she gives is sound. Council The city council is the legislative body for the city. Its role is to adopt laws and policies to govern the city. The council leaves implementation up to the city manager and the rest of the city staff. While the particulars of how council members are elected vary by city, members are always elected by the citys residents. Direct election ensures that council members are responsive to the peopl e who voted them into office. Mayor In most situations, the mayor is a voting member of the city council who has no more authority than any other council member. The mayor presides over council meetings and performs ceremonial duties as outlined in the city charter. Effective mayors exert more influence than their official authority gives them.

Air Force Combat Controller Training

Air Force Combat Controller TrainingAir Force Combat Controller TrainingCombat controllers set up air besucherzahlen control and perform close air support in remote locations. And it takes some time to groom them - more than 24 months from start to finish. Often they deploy into other military special ops teams as notlage only the JTAC - Joint Terminal Attack Controller, but as the expert in air traffic control, fire support, and air-ground communications with both fixed and rotary assets. CCTs are certified Air Traffic Controllers as well. Trainees go from basic to advanced special operations skills. Physical, mental and emotional toughness are essential. In fact, the minimum standards just to get your foot into the door for training are the following CCT PAST(Minimum Standards) - 2 x 25 meter underwater (Pass/Fail, 3 min between each)with10 min rest - 500 meter swim (freestyle, breaststroke, sidestroke),max time 11 min 42secwith30 min rest - 1.5 mile run, max time 10 min10 sec with 10 min rest -Pull ups in 1 min,8 minimum reps with 3 min rest - Sit ups in 2 min,48 minimum repswith 3 min rest - Push ups in 2 min,48 minimum repswith 3 min rest - 3 mile - 50 lb ruck march in under 45 minutes It is not recommended to stop your progress at the minimum standards. You will need your fitness levels to be higher than these standards to be successful and survive the cut. The Combat Controller Training Pipeline After the Candidate Course there are two different professions with two different pipelines (but similar) to follow depending on if you want to be a PJ or CCT. Here is the PJ and CCT pipeline of training Basic Military Training 8.5 weeks of training. CCT Recruits can request upon enlistment to join the CCT program if they qualify, so they will know if they get the opportunity to attend CCT training during the recruiting process IF they maintain standards. Battlefield Airman Prep Course - All battlefield airmen candidates (PJ, CCT, SOWT, and TACP) attend an 8-week prep course. The goal of Prep is to rebuild the Airmen for a more challenging training program in the Air Force Special Operations Command. CCT Selection is a two-week-long Combat Control Selection Course at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. The selection course focuses on sports physiology, nutrition, basic exercises, combat control history and fundamentals. After selection, the CCT recruit will attend the Combat Control Operator Course located at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi. The CCT Operator course is 15.5 weeks long where the recruit will learn all the skills to specialize in air to ground communications, aircraft capabilities, navigation, and more. Finally, the 12-week Combat Control School is offered to make this warrior highly capable to perform air traffic control, air-ground communications, and air support in any environment in the world. During the Advanced Skill Training, the additional military training the CCT endures makes the special operator.Learning to jump from planes, combat SCUBA dive, are just a few of the advanced military training received by these special operators will learn in the next 12-15 months. US Army Airborne School - 3 weeks US Army Combat Divers School - 4 weeks US Navy Underwater Egress Training - 1 day US Air Force Basic Survival School - 2.5 weeks US Army Free-fall Parachutist School - 5 weeks CCTs and the gruppe The goal of training is to teach the skills needed to call in air strikes and more, but most importantly, it is about taking a group of men and forming a disciplined team. Throughout their careers, with less than 500 officers and enlisted men assigned to the specialty, its likely theyll work together at some point. So teamwork must be second nature. Once the CCTs have completed all the above courses, they get stationed at the various Special Tactics Squadrons around the world such as Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, Hurlburt Field, Florida, Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico, Pope Field, Nort h Carolina, Kadena Air Base, Japan, RAF Mildenhall, United Kingdom. Training Is Never Done When in the Air Force Special Operations, the CCT learns many ways special operations forces get to work. That includes parachuting - both static line and free fall, scuba diving, land navigation, vehicle and boat. After they become static-line parachutists, sporting more than 100 pounds of gear on their backs when they hit the ground running, students jump into a more demanding and dangerous skill. The highlight of the phase for most students is military free-fall parachuting. Combat ready When they deploy, Combat Controllers are battlefield airmen and are responsible for the close coordination of airstrikes, aircraft traffic control of fixed wing, helicopter gunships, and unmanned drones flown by different branches of the military. CCTs are vital to ground personnel in Afghanistan after combat troops were scaled back in the 15-year war, supporting Afghan troops with airstrikes and a erial surveillance missions in order to fight back the Taliban and ISIS. Why should you care about LinkedIn? LinkedIn has become a universally adopted hiring tool, with more than 93 percent of recruiters using it as part of their process (Jobvite). In comparison, only 56 percent of companies were hiring on social media in 2011 (SHRM). “More than 87 percent of recruiters use LinkedIn as part of their process.” This trend is most likely to continue. Recruiters already report social professional networks to be the no. 1 source of quality hires. Top recruiters engage with LinkedIn 60 percent more than average ones. And where the best go, others are likely to follow. You should take notice too. LinkedIn is the third most popular social network in terms of unique visitors - right behind Facebook and Twitter. Still, even though most people are familiar with the former two, LinkedIn can be a bit intimidating for complete beginners. We’ll help you get started. How does hiring on LinkedIn work? Understand how the hiring process looks from the perspective of recruiters. A lot of recruitment work revolves around the distinction between active and passive candidates. Active candidates are those who are actively seeking work. They respond to job advertisements and actively reach out to potential employers. This doesn’t mean they’re necessarily unemployed. About 25 percent of fully-employed workforce falls into this category. When it comes to passive candidates, distinctions can get a bit blurry. For instance, not all passive candidates are totally passive. Many are employed and simply not actively looking for something new. Still, recruiters know that about 87 percent of the workforce are open to new job opportunities. Most recruiters see the indisputable advantages of hiring passive talent. Passive candidates are unlikely to inflate their qualifications  since they’re not desperate for a job. They also have the exact skill set  recruiters seek. This means passive hires are  often a better fit for their company than what recruiters usually find in their pile of resumes. This is where LinkedIn comes into play. Recruiters scour LinkedIn for quality candidates on a daily basis. They only have limited options when searching for the ever-elusive passive talent. For this reason, social media are often the most powerful tool at their disposal. Whether you’re actively looking for work or simply keeping an eye out for a new opportunity, you want to make sure your LinkedIn profile stands out. Getting noticed on LinkedIn is no alchemy. You can make it happen by focusing on these three aspects of personal branding 1. Be presentable. LinkedIn is speed dating for professionals. Once recruiters find your profile, you want to keep them there. Approach your LinkedIn page as a place where you can show off your personal brand. Avoid anything odd, you don’t want to put them off. Mind how you appear in a search result. Your headline is the first thing they’re going to see. You have 120 characters at the top of your page to tell the world what you (want to) do. Many people just put down their official job title, which is not very informative. Try to be as descriptive as possible. If you simply write “Advertising Professional” or “Marketing Specialist,” it’s difficult to say what your expertise might be. It’s much better to write something like “Seasoned advertising professional with 15+ years of experience in brand strategy.” This lets recruiters know exactly if you’re the fit they’re looking for. “Make your headline as descriptive as possible.” Second, if you want to score a job in Silicon Valley, change your location to Silicon Valley. Recruiters search zip codes. Finally, you want to make sure your headline, as well as your entire profile, contains relevant keywords. You need to set up your profile to be optimally findable on LinkedIn. More on this later - keep reading. Show your best face. The picture should be of your face. Not a significant other. Not a group photo. Choose a simple headshot where you’re looking straight ahead. Have a professional picture taken, if you can. Your photo doesn’t have to be boring but you need to look professional and pleasant. Go for “trustworthy” and “dependable.” Stay away from “quirky” or “sexy.” Ask yourself, “If my grandmother looked at this picture, would she be proud?” “Your photo doesn’t have to be boring but you need to look professional and pleasant.” People remember faces more than names. If you want recruiters to remember you, use a headshot. End of story. Whatever you do, don’t leave your profile without a photo. If you do that, you send the message that you couldn’t be bothered to upload it. This makes your potential employers wonder “What else is this person careless about?” One last thing - don’t forget to upload a cover photo either! Make your summary captivating. Make up your mind as to what you want to communicate about yourself. This goes for the rest of your profile as well. You need to project a clear image of who you want to be. Be a bit creative with the form of your summary. You can include infographics of your experience, a video of a talk you gave, or high-resolution photos. A combination of impactful text with strong visuals grabs recruiters’ attention. It makes them want to learn more about you. Think of it as your “elevator pitch.” You have about 20 seconds to make an impression. “…the reader needs to have a clear idea of who you are and what you bring to the table.” How far you can go in terms of creativity depends on your industry - some are more traditional than others. Still, at the end of the section, the reader must have a clear idea of who you are and what you bring to the table. End with a call to action. For example, “Please reach out to me to discuss possibilities of cooperation in .” 2. Be findable. LinkedIn is a search engine. One way recruiters search for new talent is similar to how you use Google Search. You want to make sure your name shows among top search results for your profession. Complete your profile. Basics first. LinkedIn says your profile will appear 40 times more in search results if complete. In other words, you will receive 40 times more opportunities through LinkedIn if you do this. This should be the first thing you do after signing up.  What makes a profile complete? Your industry and location. An up-to-date current position (with a description). Two past positions. Your education. Your skills (minimum of 3). A profile photo. At least 50 connections. After you’ve completed all of these, your profile will receive the “All-Star” rank. First, these profiles are more attractive to potential employers. Second, they also appear considerably higher in search results, which helps you get noticed on LinkedIn. Become familiar with LinkedIn SEO. As we have already said, LinkedIn is a search engine. This means that you should include keywords everywhere! Having the right keywords in your profile is critical for getting noticed on LinkedIn. If you’re unsure as for what keywords to choose, don’t be afraid to get some inspiration from other professionals in your field. Or you can go to the Careers page of your potential employers and pick some common keywords around that job or industry. “LinkedIn algorithm weighs current job title, past job title, and headlines more than any other sections in your profile.“ The LinkedIn algorithm can change over time. As for now, it weighs current job title, past job title, and headlines more than any other sections in your profile. Make sure these sections include the most important of your keywords. Also, don’t forget to optimise your Skills section as well. One last thing to consider - you need a sizeable network to benefit from LinkedIn SEO. The more connections you have, the easier-to-find your profile will be for anyone who’s conducting research on the vast LinkedIn database. Leave a trail of virtual crumbs that lead to your profile. Apart from LinkedIn SEO, there are several other tricks to help you get noticed. Here are some great ways to get on recruiters’ radar: Be identifiable. Go to your Privacy Controls and click “Select what others see when you’ve viewed their profile.” Make sure you check off the “Your name and headline (Recommended)” option. Now you can start visiting profiles of people you want to notice you.  When you view other people’s profiles, they will view your profile in return. All things in moderation, though. If they see you’re visiting their profiles ten times a day, it can get creepy. If you still want to do it, select the anonymous option in your Privacy Controls. Check out who’s viewed your personal profile. You will only be able to access this feature if you become identifiable to others (see above). This is a great way to track the visibility of your profile and see how likely you are to get noticed by recruiters. Make use of @mentions in your status updates. You can tag other users and companies in status updates - just like on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. Include the @ symbol immediately followed by the user’s/company’s name. They will get alerted that you mentioned them. Publish content. If you don’t want to create new content - become a content curator! It’s much easier to simply scroll through your homepage and share, like and comment on posts created by others. In this way, you can easily become visible to a large number of users. Engage in groups. Hiring professionals prowl within industry groups and blogs. Join them - especially if you want to change industries. It’s a great way to learn more about an industry and get on a recruiter’s radar. More about groups below. 3. Be unforgettable. Recruiters are busy people who interact with multiple candidates on a daily basis. You need not only to catch their attention  but also to sustain it. Join groups and engage. Groups are one of the strongest features in LinkedIn. You have more than 1.3 million groups on LinkedIn to choose from. Join as many relevant groups as you can and engage in the conversation. “You have more than 1.3 million groups on LinkedIn to choose from. Join as many as you can.” If you don’t know where to start, LinkedIn allows you to easily find and connect with people who studied at the same alma mater. These are the people you have things in common with even if you have no previous experience. Don’t forget to: Take part in the conversation only if you have something to say. Never complain or express sour grapes. Share your unique expertise. Post useful and interesting content to your groups. This can be any piece of work-related content: blog articles you wrote or read, a funny (but relevant!) video you watched, a news report concerning your industry, etc. Encourage others to engage with you. Ask questions, especially those which can be answered with very short answers. Leverage groups to message other group members. LinkedIn restricts 1:1 InMail communication to first-degree connections. There’s a workaround for that. First, you need to be a LinkedIn user for at least 30 days. Second, you need to be a member of the particular group at least for 4 days. If you qualify, then LinkedIn allows you to send 15 one-on-one messages per month to other group members - even those you’re not connected with. When you interact with other members of your groups, you become impossible to overlook and your personal brand grows familiar. Get some recommendations. Recommendations add layers of credibility to your profile in the eyes of potential employers. Recruiters want to see that you’ve developed solid relationships. This means there’s nothing better than a thoughtful recommendation from a former colleague or a respected peer. How can you get them? You can simply ask your former colleagues or partners to write a recommendation for you. If you do this, remember that most professionals are quite busy and many can find writing difficult. For these reasons, it helps if you give them a hand by reminding them of your past collaborations. Another way to do it would be to offer to give recommendations to others. Try to write a glowing recommendation to your past colleagues and watch the awesome things happen. “When you give recommendations, you get recommended in return.” Most recruiters don’t care if you have gazillions of endorsements. They are mostly regarded as the  confetti of the LinkedIn world. Still, you want to keep your endorsements organised and in order. Build your network and stay on the radar. Everyone you meet can turn into a useful contact down the line. So connect with everyone. And make it personal. The first step to do this is to personalise the message you send when you ask people to connect with you. Even a simple personalised message can do wonders: “It was a pleasure to meet you at the conference. I enjoyed our conversation. Good luck with your future projects and let’s stay in touch. Kind regards, Martin.” Connect with everyone. And make it personal. This also means you should never connect with people through the mobile app, as the app doesn’t allow for customised messages.   Also, every time you connect to someone new on LinkedIn, you should get into the  habit of filling out information in the “Relationship” tab on their profile. These notes are only visible to you and they will help you recall valuable information in future. You can include details about their interests, about how you met, or even reminders to reach out to them periodically. Polish your profile. Get noticed on LinkedIn. Invest in your future. LinkedIn is a wonderful tool for finding the job of your dreams. In the end, however, its not about a job. Its about investing in your future. Networks you build and relationships you establish now will build you up in return. The magic of LinkedIn is that it represents the most vibrant network of mentors and mentees, people of different talents and backgrounds. Its a place of numerous opportunities. The more invested you become in it, the better. Share Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments!

3 ways to impress your boss after getting a promotion

3 ways to impress your boss after getting a promotion 3 ways to impress your boss after getting a promotion Continuing to move  up the corporate ladder isn’t the easiest thing to do. Here’s what to do after getting a promotion.Get comfortable expanding your horizonsYou might as well get used to it.Celine Tarrant, founder of Smart Girls Sweat and co-founder of editorial platform femBA, writes in The Muse about what to do after landing a promotion (in approximately the first 90 days). One of her tips is to “look for opportunities outside of your immediate role.”“A great way to differentiate yourself in your new role is to brainstorm new opportunities. For example, if you’ve recently been promoted to account manager working on an established account, share suggestions you have for attracting new business,” she writes. “Pitch your ideas to your manager and offer to lead new initiatives. Since the idea falls outside the scope of your job description, you’ll get brownie points for going the extra mile. It’s a surefire way to get noticed as someone who thinks creatively.”She later writes about how if you try to drastically disrupt the status quo, you might encounter roadblocks and that “you’ll need to exercise your best judgment to decide how much you can rock the boat without stepping on too many toes” within the 90-day time period.Figure out where you standDon’t forget to do this early on.Kevin Eikenberry, Chief Potential Officer of The Kevin Eikenberry Groupm leadership expert and co-author of From Bud to Boss â€" Secrets to a Successful Transition to Remarkable Leadership and more, writes on his blog that after getting a promotion, you need to “get clear expectations.”“First thing you need to do is really understand your role. What do you expect of yourself, what does the organization expect of you, and what does your new boss expect of you? These expectations form the basis for your success. A misunderstanding or misalignment of expectations is the fastest way to frustration and failure.”Be a keen observerYou might just save yourse lf a lot of time and effort.Amy Jen Su, coauthor of Own the Room and managing partner and co-founder of Paravis Partners, tells the Harvard Business Review about this.“Any time you onboard into a group dynamic, it’s wise to spend time getting the lay of the land. Understand how the team operates, how communication flows, how decisions get made, and where people’s hot buttons lie,” she told the site. She later adds, “you eventually want to go from learner to contributor to leader.”

Creating a Successful Startup Business Plan

Creating a Successful Startup Business Plan Creating a Successful Startup Business Plan Creating a Successful Startup Business Plan Conlan Do you dream of starting your own business? To make that dream a reality, youll need to put together a business plan for your startup. Heres why a startup business plan is a road map for entrepreneurs. A good plan will keep you focused on important goals and help keep you on message as you talk with potential investors, business partners, employees and customers. Heres a startup business plan example. Determine Your Plans Audience The best way to determine the length and format of your business plan is to think about your target audience. Business plan styles range from informal, back-of-the-envelope sketches to two-page, near-term road maps to 30-page plans with illustrations and exhibits, says business plan expert Hal Shelton. You may find that a simple one-page document makes more sense, especially if youre not looking for outside funding or partners. The Small Business Administration offers examples of startup business plans to research. While most startup business plans generally follow the same format, keep your audience in mind. For example, if your plan is seeking a loan from a bank or the SBA, it may be different than one written for an angel investor, says entrepreneur consultant Karen Southall Watts. Ask your target audience (banker, investor, teacher, potential partner) if they have a startup business plan example or format you can use. If so, be sure to follow it carefully, Watts says. Do Your Research Market research should be part of your startup business plan. Talk to potential customers to understand your niche in the marketplace, recommends Silvia Mah, founder of Hera Labs, an accelerator for female business owners. Knowing your competition is incredibly important to your business plan as it allows you to address details of product development, future milestones, holes in the market and it gives you an idea of your businesss growth potential. Define your customer as clearly as possible, Watts says. Social media is a great way to examine potential customers and competitors and get a handle on the market as a whole, she says. Your plan must convey an understanding of who your ideal customer is and how you intend to make money. Without these elements the plan is incomplete, Watts says. Cover the Basics In terms of format, business plans start with an executive summary and end with the financial statements, Shelton says. In between, the document should address your plans and expectations for marketing and sales, operations, staffing and so on. Other important topics to include are: Goals for sales, market share, revenue, profit and so on, and why theyre attainable. A plan for reaching those goals and data to back up your plan. Supporting information about the organization and your team. This may include board members and advisors, potential or actual employees, etc. Finally, include your exit strategy, Mah says. Including this in your business planning process helps you forecast your funding needs and provides clarity as you identify strategic partners and targeted exit companies, she says. Expect to Revise Regularly While a final version of your plan may go to your loan officer, keep in mind that a business plan for startups is a living document. Tweaking and pivoting a business idea is a continual and iterative process, Mah says. Talk with customers about their interactions with your business and its products or services. Watts recommends revisiting the plan at least once every six months or more often if your business hinges on new or changing technology. Mah recommends going back to examine your executive summary and ask if it still defines what youre doing, how youre doing it and for whom. If not, dig deeper. Revise and regroup and move forward with the next phase of your business. All the best with your new business venture!

Lighter Axle Reinvents Drivetrain. Does Detroit Care

Lighter Axle Reinvents Drivetrain. Does Detroit Care Lighter Axle Reinvents Drivetrain. Does Detroit Care Lighter Axle Reinvents Drivetrain. Does Detroit Care? Some inventions simply sound too good to be true. American Axle Manufacturings Quantum drivetrain might be one of them. It is at least 30 percent lighter than a typical pickup or SUV axle, light enough to shave 100 pounds off a heavy-duty pickup. It is also 30 percent more efficientand it costs about as much to make as a conventional axle. Quantum drivetrainshaves 100 lbs. off a heavy-duty pickup.Image:American Axle Manufacturing Quantums story shows how new thinking can reinvigorate even the most staid mechanical products. And also how hard it can be to sell a true innovation to a conservative industry. Top Story:Air Taxi Aces Test Flight That story began six years ago, soon after AAMs lab had launched EcoTrac, an all-wheel drive system that turns on automatically during challenging driving conditions. All of the companys electronics experts were focused on adapting the technology for their first commercial customer, so Jim Downs, AAMs director of innovation, decided to focus on a strictly mechanical system. It was clear that EcoTrac was going to have a major impact, Downs said. Its now a billion-dollar product. We were riding high and decided that whatever we worked on, it would have to have a really significant impact on the company. Editors Pick: Young Engineer Takes Great Strides with Prosthetic Foot They decided to focus on beam axles, which are typically used in light and medium-duty pickup trucks, SUVs, and vans. The teams goal, which Downs calls a delusion of grandeur, was to build an axle that was dramatically lighter, more efficient, and about the same price as existing axles. With gasoline well above $3.60 a gallon, it seemed like a cant-miss proposition because every pound shaved off the weight of a vehicle improves fuel economy. Axles were a good target, since they had changed little over 100 years. They were also the only major automotive component that still relied on shimssmall metal spacersfor a perfect fit. In the 1970s, every vehicle system of any level of complexity required shims for adjustments, Downs explained. This included the engine and powertrain and even the body. I own a 1972 Cadillac, and everything fit together beautifullybut not because the part was a perfect fit. When I rebuilt it, I wound up with a 5-gallon bucket of shims. Related:Manufacturing Takes Flight Since then, companies have improved manufacturing consistency and redesigned the sequence of how parts mated to each other to get the fit right the first time. The axle is the last piece of the auto that still relies on shims and threaded adjusters, which adds to production cost. Globally, nobody had figured it out, Downs said. There is a good reason for that. A conventional axle has 12 different elements in the stack and the total spec for all of them is 30 microns. If you had to split that across 12 different elements, thats a problem, Downs said. To achieve that spec, youd have to make the individual components so insanely precise, theyre not economical. So everyone uses shims. Downs met with two of his top engineers and spent the next year drawing pictures. Their goal was to slash production costs enough to offset the cost of the lightweight aluminum elements they wanted to use to reduce weight. It was, What if we mount it like this or like that, he said. Each time, we were trying to come up with ways to reduce the number of elements. The redesigned lightweight axle. Image:American Axle Manufacturing This went on for almost a year. They would draw a picture, convert it to a model, and use software to analyze its performance. If they hit a flaw they could not solve right away, they would scrap the design and start anew. Each cycle took two or three weeks. Related: Manufacturing Takes Flight After 13 failures, they finally hit an iteration that held up. They took almost another year to design, detail, and produce their new axle. When they tested their first prototype, it worked in the forward direction but not in reverse. Our analytical model let us down, Downs said. It didnt catch it, and we spent the next year trying to understand why the model was so wrong and what was really going on. The team also redesigned the axle. The new axle worked in both directions. It integrated ball bearings into the gear, which was mounted directly on the housing. This reduced the stack to only two elements, which produced a stiffer, more efficient mechanism. It also made it possible to assemble without shims. Except it didnt. It was not much better than existing designs. It took time, but the team eventually traced the problem to the large single nut used to clamp the stack in place. It did not apply force evenly enough, which allowed microscopic movements in the gear set that sapped efficiency from the system. Switching to a pattern of smaller bolts fixed the problem. Downs choice of ball bearings was unusual, but they are slightly more efficient under light loads. They also do not require a preload to reduce noise, vibration, and ride harshness, which simplifies the construction. Engineering bearings was a new field for us, but absolutely required if we wanted to integrate the bearing races [the grooves in which the balls ride] into the parts, Downs said. We did not want to involve too many outside suppliers, or the whole world would know how to do this when done. AAM invested in equipment to grind, hone, and measure bearings. They learned to measure what their machinery was doing. Most importantly, they developed proprietary methods to adjust the wheels to grind races into the large axel components. The reduction in part count and assembly complexity saved costs that enabled AAM to use more aluminum. The redesign shrank the size of the drive, reducing the amount of aluminum in the housing. This made it less expensive. More on Inventions: Robots to the Rescue The company also developed ways to take advantage of the lightweight metal during production and assembly. One example is the flange that connects the driveshaft with the axle. This is ordinarily bolted into place. The new method pushes an aluminum flange into a mating hard steel part that cut a spline into the softer metal, producing a low-cost, lash-free joint. The entire assembly is much smaller than the original, which reduces mass and cost while improving stiffness, energy transfer, and efficiency. The Quantum project exceeded even AAMs expectations in terms of performance. Yet the auto industry has not rushed to embrace the new technology. Our biggest hurdle is that customers need to have a compelling need to try a new technology, Downs said. Gas prices have fallen and there is less pressure to boost fleet mileage. What we have done looks really different than what everybody does, he added, and the auto industry is going to need lots of evidence before it comes around. People who work in this industry tend to have the worst burnout

People who work in this industry tend to have the worst burnout People who work in this industry tend to have the worst burnout Everyone likely experiences burnout, but working in accommodation or food services makes you more susceptible than other professions, while others are even proud of it, according to new data. The Sleep Judge took a look at nearly 1,000 employees and examined how they deal with work burnout. Work Burnout, according to the Mayo Clinic, is work-related stress that comes via physical or emotional exhaustion that can make one feel reduced accomplishment and even feel a loss of personal identity. Those working in accommodation and food services averaged the highest burnout while others in public administration, professional and education services, and transportation and warehousing were tightly behind. Seventeen percent in transportation and warehousing reported suffering extreme burnout, the highest out of any profession, followed by retail trade (16%) and public administration (15%).Some factors that lead to burnout include dysfunctional workplace, dealing with co-workers, and having a fee ling of lack of control, according to the study. The study claims that those who experienced work burnout experience a “higher degree of mental burnout than physical burnout.” Wholesale trade and accommodation and food services were professions that experienced the most mental and physical burnout at work.Even some were proud of their work burnout. Twenty-eight percent in services like waste management and administration and support reported wearing their work burnout on their chest. More than a quarter in construction and manufacturing also said they were proud. When looking at generations, Millennials were the proudest (15%) while just 4% of Baby Boomers felt the same way.

11 signs youre in a rut (and how to get unstuck)

11 signs you're in a rut (and how to get unstuck) 11 signs you're in a rut (and how to get unstuck) Not everyone who’s in a rut realizes they’re in one. They just sense something isn’t right. And many people who know they’re in a rut don’t know how to climb out of it. Regardless of which situation someone finds themselves in, it’s important they make changes to ensure their long-term health and happiness at home, at work, and in life overall. We’ll look at signs you could be in a rut and offer suggestions for getting out and getting back in the groove.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!1. You dream about getting away- and not just on vacationEveryone daydreams now and then. But if you’re always wishing you were somewhere else, you may be in a rut. The surprise and novelty of doing something spontaneous fills our brains with the motivation neurotransmitter, dopamine, which makes us feel excited, curious and adventurous. Spontaneity also gives us a feeling of a utonomy, and that sense of control can boost motivation, too.2. You don’t look forward to much, other than sleeping or getting through whatever you’re doingIf you regularly feel like you don’t have anything to look forward to, start to look for beauty in what lies around you. Instead of waiting for something monumental to happen, keep an eye out for the little things that life has to offer. These can make a big difference.3.  No matter how hard you try, it feels like you’re going nowhereIt’s not uncommon to feel stuck in the hamster wheel, especially at work. Our brains are wired to resist change, preferring to fall back on old habits. But visualizing our goals and choosing new strategies to achieve them creates new neural pathways in our brains. The more we use them, the stronger the pathways become and the more we can get beyond what’s familiar, safe and often stifling.4. You look at other people’s lives with envyIn the age of social media and curated photo collectio ns, it’s easy to compare your life to others’. But it’s important to shift your focus back to you. That could mean repeating a positive, empowering phrase about yourself, eating healthier meals or even pampering yourself just because.5. Even though you check things off your to-do list, it doesn’t feel like you’re getting much doneIf you feel little sense of accomplishment no matter how much you do, the issue may be that you’re always aiming for perfection. To combat this, silence your internal critic and be happy just getting things done. You’ll feel productive and better about not being so hard on yourself. And remember, there’s always another day or project on which to improve.6. You want to get your creative juices flowing, but feel like you’re running on emptyYou’re feeling spent and uninspired, and you can’t shake the feeling. Or can you? By setting aside an hour or two a week to devote to a passion project, you’ll be able to channel your energy into som ething you  want  to do versus something you  need  to do. It’s a true expression of yourself and can reignite your zest for life by giving you a refreshed or new perspective.7. You feel bored most of the timeIt’s time to take a withdrawal from your memory bank. Think of something you did in the past that got you excited, and picture yourself doing it. It can even be something from your youth. Once you pinpoint that activity, go do it. This method for getting out of your rut is called the flip technique, and it helps turn your discontentment into something that makes you feel happy again.8. You regularly choose to stay home instead of going out with friendsIt’s one thing to be a homebody, but it’s quite another to never go out. Try examining your work-life balance, which can help you determine whether at least one of these aspects of your life is vibrant. Ask yourself whether you’re engaging in the same activities over and over. See what’s on your schedule, and make sure you have new opportunities to look forward to.9. You make excuses for not doing things, such as “I don’t have time”When you find yourself believing you can’t do something, dig deeper to find out what’s really stopping you. Is it fear? A past experience? Lack of confidence? By looking within, you’ll become conscious of that limiting belief â€" the first step toward getting past it. Try journaling about daily thoughts and experiences to figure out what’s really going on.10. You often think of yourself as a martyr, putting others’ needs first to the detriment of your ownHelping others is admirable, but constantly putting their needs ahead of your own isn’t. It’s an unhealthy pattern you need to break. Make a list of the things that make you feel like a martyr or, worse, a victim. Recognize your role in each situation, then brainstorm ways to change them. Check them off the list as you do. This way, you’re taking control of the situation rather than letting it con trol you.11. You don’t see the purpose of anything you doIf “What’s the point?” dominates your inner dialogue, try getting outside more often. Research shows that exposure to our natural settings changes the brain to reduce anxiety and thwart depression. Brain activity in the areas associated with critical thinking diminishes, and nature helps turn off our physiological stress response to put us in a more restful state. This article first appeared on Netcredit.Sources Luna, T. ASME Public Affairs Outreach Council Conducts Technical Tour, Robotics Discussions ASME Public Affairs Outreach Council Conducts Technical Tour, Robotics Discussions ASME Public Affairs & Outreach Council Conducts Technical Tour, Robotics Discussions PAO attendees hear from a Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems employee during their Orlando offsite tour. Attendees represented PAO’s six committees and board as well as the Early Career Leadership Intern Program to Serve Engineering (ECLIPSE). Earlier this month in conjunction with the 2019 ASME Annual Meeting in Orlando, Fla., the Public Affairs Outreach (PAO) Council continued its six-month analysis of the field of robotics in an effort to identify opportunities for ASME and the broader engineering profession. In teleconferences ahead of the Annual Meeting, the PAO Sector had solicited an internal review of the robotics landscape from Raj Manchanda, ASMEs business development director for robotics and manufacturing, and external expertise from Dr. Marcia OMalley, a professor at Rice University and co-chair of the ASME Robotics Public Policy Task Force; and Robert Roney, Jr., an executive with GE Measurement Control Systems. With the benefit of these contextualizing perspectives, PAO attendees including guests from the Early Career Leadership Intern Program to Serve Engineering (ECLIPSE) and the Diversity Inclusion Strategy Committee toured the facilities at Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS), where the company performs onsite inspection, maintenance and manufacturing of gas and steam turbine components. MHPS robotics capabilities in manufacturing and repair services further informed the Councils firsthand understanding of opportunities and needs within the turbine industry. Marc Parker, the ECLIPSE intern for PAO, was key in connecting the Council to MHPS through his work with Southern Company. Kalan Guiley (standing), senior vice president of PAO, and the PAO Council discuss K-12 STEM initiatives to encourage hands-on robotics education. Onsite at MHPS, attendees then heard from Tj Nguyen, the assistant director of the Southeastern Center of Robotics Education, on ways to promote and advance robotics success among K-12 STEM educators and students. Nguyens experience with hands-on games, experiments and competitions highlighted the need to engage students in this space from a young age a time when the imperative to be versed in this ever-expanding field feels within reach, one Lego block at a time. The next day, the PAO Council also heard from engineers with Siemens Energy, the third perspective from the big three of major players in the gas turbine industry: GE, Mitsubishi Hitachi and Siemens. Mechanical engineers Forrest Ruhge and David Meek focused on topics including the effects of robotics related to worker displacement, training and productivity. They were also interested in PAO conversations regarding the need to further support engineering education and learning/development flexibility toward the student-to-workforce pathway. Paul Garbett, director of engineering at Siemens Energy, represented the Industry Advisory Board at this PAO Council meeting and was integral in recruiting Ruhge and Meek. With this holistic overview and under the leadership and vision of Kalan Guiley, senior vice president of PAO, the Council sought to actively and deliberatively identify the needs and opportunities within the robotics space. Four groups discussed ASME opportunities for solutions and programmatic mechanisms to create change to that end, before a generative conversation yielded five foci for ensuing PAO recommendations: social impact, workforce development, safety, technology advancement and ethics. As it did with its bioengineering analysis during and leading up to IMECE 2018 in Pittsburgh, the Council will synthesize these findings in a detailed report for ASME leadership. After six months, PAO can safely state that ASME is uniquely positioned to serve as a leader to and for robotics developers, including hardware modularization and programming standards for applications especially in manufacturing and inspection/maintenance. There also remain significant opportunities for industry in widely accepted testing protocols for service robots effectiveness, reliability and safety. And there are frontiers yet to be explored for robots that operate in extremely hazardous environments, and frontiers in education initiatives in the United States and abroad to make robots commonplace in classrooms and vocational training programs. In short, engineers stand at a precipice: there is real potential to shape the future like never before, informed by ASMEs ethical imperative its mission to improve the quality of life for all. How to Gracefully Resolve Workplace Conflict

How to Gracefully Resolve Workplace Conflict How to Gracefully Resolve Workplace Conflict If you’re lucky, you like and appreciate your colleagues. They’re smart, motivated and generous - and if you’re really fortunate, they feel the same way about you. But over the course of your career, you’ll likely find yourself in situations where you need to resolve workplace conflict with coworkers or supervisors, and you’ll need more than luck. When you share resources and spend time with other people for 40 or more hours a week, some clashes are pretty much inevitable. In worst-case scenarios, you have to involve management. Yet most conflicts don’t need to reach that level. Employers value staff who know how to sort out all sorts of problems - whether professional or interpersonal. You can be the person in your firm or department who navigates difficult disputes and sticky situations with diplomacy and professionalism. Here are seven tips to help you resolve workplace conflict. 1. Repeat the serenity mantra You and your fellow employees are not going to see eye to eye on every issue. Whether you have disagreements over politics or work projects, different opinions exist - and that’s OK. Don’t sweat the small stuff that doesn’t directly affect work quality, and resolve to accept the annoying things you cannot change. 2. Don’t let the tension escalate Leaving conflicts unresolved typically makes them worse, and the result is wasted time and energy. Don’t let arguments get in the way of productivity at work. After calming down and reflecting on the problem, take concrete steps toward getting the relationship back on track. If need be, act like the adult in the room and take action first, no matter how awkward or uncomfortable it feels. Check out our report on happiness in the workplace now! 3. Reopen lines of communication When you’re not getting along with someone else or they’re not getting along with you, the first thing that happens is a breakdown in dialogue. While this is a natural reaction, it’s also counterproductive. The best way to resolve a conflict is via effective communication, which is actually a two-pronged approach involving  speaking and listening skills. Ask the person what’s wrong, then really hear what they have to say - with the hope the other employee will do the same. Conflicts at work are rarely resolved by the silent treatment. 4. Assume good intentions Some workplace conflicts stem from misunderstandings rather than actual disagreements over fact or policy. For example, people continue using that pricey organic salad dressing you keep in the employee refrigerator. But rather than being too cheap to buy their own, perhaps they thought it was communal property. So, before you get angry, consider the situation from different points of view. Put simply: Don’t jump to conclusions. 5. Be willing to give and take The word compromise sometimes has a negative connotation. Some people feel that compromising is synonymous with either giving in or giving up cherished principles. They struggle to concede even the smallest point. However, diplomacy is based on tradeoffs and finding an acceptable middle ground. Aim to create a win-win situation where both parties walk away gaining something. 6. Let bygones be bygones When you and the other person come to an understanding, move on and don’t look back. You don’t have to be best friends with people who rub you the wrong way, but you do have to be civil and professional. Life is too short to let grudges fester in the workplace. 7. Know when help is needed to resolve workplace conflict Sometimes empathy and dialogue go only so far. If the issue is serious, such as workplace bullying, and you’ve done all you can to resolve it, don’t feel bad about asking management or human resources to recommend a way forward. Effective conflict resolution occasionally requires a mediator. Just be sure to approach management in an even-headed manner - and maintain that throughout the process. Your workplace is made up of various personality types. You will naturally gravitate toward some colleagues and away from others. The smart move for your career - and emotional health - is to not become embroiled in petty problems or workplace politics. And who knows? By having an open mind and spirit, you may even come to appreciate the finer qualities of a former rival. Tags

How to Make the Most of Your Job Search When Unemployment is Low

How to Make the Most of Your Job Search When Unemployment is Low How to Make the Most of Your Job Search When Unemployment is Low How to Make the Most of Your Job Search When Unemployment is Low With low unemployment creating a multitude of opportunities for job seekers, here’s how to leverage this strong economy during your job search. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, unemployment among American workers stands at 3.9 percent the lowest in nearly two decades. Low unemployment and an increase in the number of available jobs has created a market that favors job seekers. However, that doesn't mean you should stick to the same job-search strategies that might have worked during an economic downturn. When the job-search scales are balanced in your favor, here are four things you can do to make the most of it. Apply for reach jobs With the number of available jobs at a high, that gives job seekers more freedom during their searches. Knowing that you have room to play with means that you can apply to jobs that are typically a stretch for you regarding qualifications and experience and employers are more likely to consider you because they have a number of roles to fill. For example, if your management experience is limited to mentoring others or leading projects, you might still be a good fit for a team management position. Companies who are having a tough time finding and keeping experienced managers may consider you for a management role and provide management and leadership training to fill the gap. Don't settle In this economic climate, there are many open positions available, so you have the luxury of shopping around and considering only those positions that deliver what you're looking for in a job. You can limit your job search to those positions that offer the best commute, compensation, and career-growth opportunities for you. While it's never a good idea to take an interview or job offer for granted, it does make sense to set the bar high for your next position and negotiate the best possible offer. Highly qualified talent is hard to find, so when you know you're worth it, make it clear to hiring managers what you want and need in your next role. Continue building your network Your professional network is a valuable source of advice, personal introductions, and information sharing. In fact, your network can be your secret weapon for a successful job search in good times and bad. During an economic downturn when jobs are scarce, your network might be the only reliable source for discovering and being considered for new job opportunities. On the other hand, in a strong economic climate, there will be many other avenues besides your network to help with your job search. Related:The Importance of Networking (And How to Do It Well) Even when times are good, however, don't forget your network. You might not need to call in a favor from your network now, but you'll need to stay connected so that you'll have options if you need later on. No matter the current economic environment, it makes sense to continually make new introductions, give and receive advice, and deepen pre-existing relationships. Think about a career reinvention In a strong economy, companies are growing and adding new jobs to accommodate their expansion. If you've been thinking about changing industries or pursuing a different career, now may be the time to act. Jobs are plentiful across a range of industries. For example, the education and health services sector alone created more than 54,000 jobs in July 2018. While pursuing a different career comes with some associated risks, you can improve your chances of success by exploring your options when employers are in aggressive hiring mode rather than when they're cutting back. Your current employer may also be adding jobs and have opportunities available internally. For example, if you're in a sales role but would like to gain experience in data analysis or research, there may be an opportunity to rotate into a different department within your current company. Alternatively, if you're interested in launching a new career in another industry, the plentiful supply of available jobs will give you more opportunities to choose from. A job search in any economy presents unique challenges and opportunities for candidates and employers. During times of job growth, it's a seller's market that benefits job seekers. You can make the most of a favorable job market by carefully considering your options, aiming high, and remaining open to new paths to job-search success.
